Small Group 9 Pleural Disease and Pulm. HTN Flashcards
How would wedge capillary pressure change with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension?
normal or low
Define dead space.
areas that ventilate but do not perfuse
What can cause low V/Q in the case of PE?
atelectasis pulmonary hemorrhage loss of surfactant pneumoconstriction localized pulmonary edema
in the presence of a intracardiac shunt, rises in PA pressure can also result in right to left shunt
Why does supplemental oxygen therapy speed recovery from pneumothorax?
nitrogen rich atmospheric air in the pneumothorax diffuses out of the pleural space more quickly when supplemental oxygen is administered to lower the partial pressure of N2 in the capillary blood
What would not work to treat malignant pleural effusion?
diuretics
Why can malignant effusions be caused by increased capillary permeability?
increased VEG-F with the malignancy
