Q

What can cause low V/Q in the case of PE?

A
atelectasis
pulmonary hemorrhage
loss of surfactant
pneumoconstriction
localized pulmonary edema

in the presence of a intracardiac shunt, rises in PA pressure can also result in right to left shunt

Q

Why does supplemental oxygen therapy speed recovery from pneumothorax?

A

nitrogen rich atmospheric air in the pneumothorax diffuses out of the pleural space more quickly when supplemental oxygen is administered to lower the partial pressure of N2 in the capillary blood
