Small Babies Flashcards
What is the most accurate method of estimating gestational age?
Ultrasound undertaken before 20 weeks gestation
- Most reliable using crown to rump length between 8 and 14 weeks and head circumference between weeks 15-20
How long after the date of the start of the last menstrual period (LMP) is the estimated date of delivery?
- 40 weeks after LMP
What is small for gestational age (SGA)?
Fetus or baby with BW or estimated weight that is either:
- 2 SD from the mean for GA
- Under the 10th percentile
What is an Intrauterine growth restriction (AKA Fetal growth restriction)?
- Fetus which fails to meet its growth potential because of genetic or environmental factors
What is defined as low birth weight (LBW)?
- Less than 2500g
What is defined as very low birth weight (VLBW)?
- Less than 1500g
A small baby is born to small parents this is most likely due to SGA or IUGR?
- Small for gestational age. Child growing to genetic potential which just happens to be smaller than reference population
Three broad categories (factors) affecting fetal growth are?
- Fetal factors
- Maternal factors
- Placental factors
What are some risk factors for having a SGA baby?
- Age > 40
- Smoke > 10 cig/day
- cocaine use
- previous SGA baby
- previous stillborn
- chronic HTN
- DM with vascular Dx
- Renal impairment
- antiphospholipid syndrome
- Threatened miscarriage
- Pre-eclampsia
- Placental abruption
- Unexplained antepartum hemorrhage
The uterus should reach the height of the umbilicus by how many weeks gestation?
20-24 weeks
The uterus will reach the xiphoid process by how many weeks?
36 weeks
Following 26 weeks, the symphysis-fundal height will be roughly equivalent to what?
- The number of weeks gestation
Problems occurring in early pregnancy will cause symmetric or asymmetric growth?
- Symmetric
- Brain development occurs in early pregnancy if issue is in early pregnacy this is affected.
- If in late pregnancy Brain development complete and only abdominal growth will be affected
