What are the 3 parts of the small intestine?
duodenum, jejunum, ileum
What is mesentery?
supports the coils of the small intestine, contains blood vessels to carry nutrients
What is the greater omentum?
peritoneum, curtain-like membrane that drapes over parts of the system
What is the main job of the small intestine?
absorption of nutrients
What are the 4 parts of the large intestine?
cecum, colon, rectum, anus
What is the cecum?
start of the large intestine, attached appendix
What is the colon?
ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid
What is the rectum?
stores waste before it is expelled from the body
What is the anus?
muscular sphincter which controls the exit of waste
What is another name for the large intestine?
colon
What are the functions of the large intestine?
reabsorbs water and passes along material that was not digested; contains intestinal flora
What is intestinal flora?
bacteria to break down cellulose
What are mass movements in the large intestine?
large portions of the colon contract to move material through it, usually after eating (defecation)
