SLR3 - Input, Output and Storage Flashcards
Define and Describe RAM
Random Access Memory
Where data that is currently in use is kept.
Quickly Reached by the computers Processor
Define and Describe ROM
Read Only Memory
Used to store the boot program to load up the operating system
Is RAM Volatile
Yes
Is ROM Volatile
No, it is Non-Volatile
Define the term volatile(with respect to ROM and RAM)
Used to describe how if a piece of hardware stores a piece of data forever or if it loses it when it is turned on
Define Virtual Storage
Allows a user to access data that is not directly stored on their computer.
Define an input device
Takes something physical and puts it into binary so it can be stored or used on the computer, for example, pressing a key on a keyboard.
Define an output device
An output device is a device that takes binary and outputs it into a physical thing that a person can interpret. For example a sound from a speaker.
Define storage
An electrical component that stores information. Allows access at a later date, as it is non-volatile.
How does optical storage work.
A laser will bounce off the surface of a disc and will be able to tell if it ahs hit a pit or a land, a 0 or 1.
Define flash storage
Flash memory has no moving parts and is therefore more durable than other options, however it does have limited numbers of read/write cycles, however this number is very high and unlikely to ever be reached.
Define magnetic storage
Magnetic storage is made up of several disks that are moved by read and write heads.
Give 3 Examples of Solid state storage
Solid State drive
USB memory sticks
Flash Memory cards
2 Advantages and disadvantages of solid state storage
Advantages: Durable Fast No Moving Parts Disadvantages: Limited reads/writes Higher costs
Give 3 examples of Optical storage
CD
DVD
Blu-ray
