SLR11 Flashcards
What is a stand alone machine
A computer not connected to any network
Can networks come in different sizes
Yes
Some as small as just two computers and the biggest one “the internet”
What are the advantages of being on a network (5)
- File sharing
- Peripheral sharing to the internet
- Access to files from any computer connected to the network
- Servers can control security, software updates and the backup of data
- Communication with other people
What are the disadvantages of being on a network (4)
- Increased security risk to data
- Malware and virus’s can spread quickly and easily
- If the server fails all computers connected may suffer
- Computers can run slow when there are a lot of data travelling on the network
What are standards and protocols
Rules in computer science to ensure that bits of software and hardware can function together easily and efficiently
What are standards
Specifications or styles that are widely accepted by users and vendors. Not rules but difficult to be popular or successful if you don’t follow them.
What are protocols
A set of rules for formatting and processing data as computers may have different hardware and software but this allows them to communicate seamlessly
There are nine common protocols what does TCP stand for
Transmission Control Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does IP stand for
Internet Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does UDP stand for
User Data Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does HTTP(S) stand for
HyperText Transfer Protocol
HyperText Transfer Protocol Security
There are nine common protocols what does FTP stand for
File Transfer Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does POP stand for
Post Office Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does IMAP stand for
Internet Message Access Protocol
There are nine common protocols what does SMTP stand for
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
What do TCP and UDP both do
Connectionless transmission model
What is the difference between TCP and UDP
UDP doesn’t have error checking and TCP does
What are TCP and UDP used for
Short messages where speed takes priority over accuracy
Why has TCP outdated UDP
TCP is far more accurate
When working with TCP what does IP do
Makes sure the data sent reaches the intended location
What is HTTPS
The fundamental protocol for the WWW
What is the different between HTTP and HTTPS
HTTPS adds encryption and authentication by adding S for Secure
What is FTP used for
Sending files between computers normally on a WAN
Why do people use FTP clients on top of the standard protocol
When interacting with a program the client generates and sends the appropriate FTP commands
There are three protocols used for servers that deal with E-mail. What does SMTP do
Transfers out going E-mails between servers and from E-mail clients to servers
There are three protocols used for servers that deal with E-mail. What does POP do
Transfers your E-mail from the server to your device and deletes the E-mail from the server in the process
There are three protocols used for servers that deal with E-mail. What does IMAP do
Keeps the E-mail on the server maintaining synchrony between multiple servers
What is the internet
A WAN made up of billions of networks, routers, cables and so much more.
What is the difference between LAN and WAN
LAN = local area network made up of a few connections and computers in a close area to each other
WAN = wide area network made up of loads of connections and computers in as big of a space as is required
