Dominant group wins the voluntary consent of the popular masses
Unlike domination, which uses state force, hegemony works through families, schools and media
What does the political economy perspective focus on
focuses on ownership/control of the media and opposition of subordinate [someone that is controlled] groups
what is a propaganda model - Political Economy Perspective
Media companies as businesses will transmit content that reflects their commercial interests
Public Media ownership vs private media ownership
Public:
Owned by the government - represents the public’s interest, Canadian values and content
Private media ownership Vs. Public Media
Owned by corporations/ profit maximization model
Ex. Bell Canada, Rogers
Leads to media concentration and restricts to the public’s sources of information and types of content available
The disadvantage of a private media ownership
You cannot convince private industry to cover the news in rural, remote parts
