sleep Flashcards
What structures contribute to the awake state?
hypothalamus, reticular activating system, and the basal forebrain: nucleus basalis of meynert
What contributes to the awake state biochemically from the hypothalamus and what are the important locations?
histamine and glutamate in the posterior hypothalamus
hypocretin 1&2 made in the lateral hypothalamus and projecting broadly
What are the important neurotransmitters of the reticular activating system, and the most important locations?
locus ceruleus
NE (and glutamate)
What is the role of the basal forebrain and the nucleus basalis of Meynert in maintaining wakefulness, biochemically?
ACh goes to the cerebral cortex from the basal forebrain/nucleus basalis of Meynert. gets input from RAS
