• Caused by parvovirus B19
Incubation period:
• 1 – 2 weeks

- How it is spread
A
- Found in droplets in coughs and sneezes of those infected, or on contaminated surfaces
- Around 50% of adults have been infected during childhood or adolescence
- Those exposed to parvovirus B19 are usually immune for life

- Prodromal phase (5)
- General signs and symptoms (3)

Prodromal phase (‘flu-like’ symptoms): • Low grade fever • Runny nose • Sore throat • Headache • Upset stomach ***Infection is most contagious during this period
Followed by:
• ‘Slapped-cheek’ distinctive bright red rash on both cheeks
• Lacy rash on the trunk and limbs
• Once rash develops, the condition is no longer contagious

- Prevention and treatment
A
- Slapped cheek is difficult to prevent
- Frequent hand washing
- Avoid sharing drinks
Treatment:
• No vaccine available
• Condition is no contagious once rash develops
