• Caused by the paramyxovirus infection (also causes measles)
Incubation period:
• 16-18 days
• Can range from 12-25 days

Spread by droplets coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person

- General signs and symptoms (6)
A
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Orchitis
- Pancreatitis

- Oral signs and symptoms (4)
A
- Parotitis
- Painful swelling of salivary glands
- Most commonly bilateral
- Can be infectious up to 7-9 days after swelling of the salivary glands

- Vaccination as prevention (2)
- Treatment (4)
A
Vaccination:
• Vaccine (MMR) for at 12 months of age
• A second dose as MMRV at 18 months of age
Treatment:
• Keep child home for 9 days after onset of swelling
• No specific treatment
• Symptomatic care
• Warm or cold packs to swollen glands may provide relief
