- Types A, B and C mainly cause infection in humans, with many sub-strains
- Influenza viruses constantly mutate. A new influenza vaccine is prepared each year to best match the strains predicted for that coming influenza season

- How it spreads
A
- Spread mainly through droplets when an infected person coughs and sneezes, or talks
- Touching surfaces infected with droplets

- General signs and symptoms (5)

- Sudden onset of fever
- Cough, sore throat
- Runny nose
- Muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue
- Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are more common in children

- Prevention and treatment (6)
A
- Cover face when coughing
- Dispose of used tissues
- Wash hands thoroughly
- Keep child home until well
- Annual seasonal influenza vaccine is available for any person 6 months or older
