Skin Terms Flashcards
Lichenified
Prolonged pressure on skin, thickens skin layers
Intertrigo
Rubbing of skin folds
Defined as bacterial, fungal or viral infection developed at site of skin breakdown due to inflammation
Surface where hyper secretion and retention fo perspiration exists
Protective keratin layer removed by friction
Blisters
Reaction to friction Silicon liner proximal edge Distal bell clapping Loose fit liner due to dehydration Hyperhidrosis( sweating)
Verrucuos hyperplasia
Warty distal skin
Ulceration and edema
Treatment: external compression, control bacteria and edema, distal support in socket
Edema
Prolonged negative pressure
- bleeding under skin “ hemosiderin”
- stump edema syndrome
Epidermis cysts
Closed sac below skin filled with sebum
Cause: blocked sebaceous glands, swollen hair follicles, trauma to skin, follicular keratin plugs,
Xerosis
Dry, scaly, rough skin
Extremely common and occasionally itchy
Condition afflicts at least 75% of people older 64 years
Worse during winter, dry months
Most common skin condition in our patients and rarely is chief complaint
Contract dermatitis
Irritants-chemical or physical: dust, glass, salt
Allergic- hypersensitive; Nichelle, leathers, rubber additives, antibiotics topical aesthetics, foams, cements
Eczema- itchy flaky, small blisters, oozing swelling
Check daily routine- new soap, clothes, laundry detergent, antibiotics, changed diet
Treatment: cool compress, anti-itch cream, local cortico steroids
Bacterial folliculitis
Hairy, oily skin aggravated by sweating and rubbing of socket
Untreated can lead to furuncles( boils), cellulitis, or eczematous weeping crusted superficially impetigo
Might not be hygiene problem
Treatment: topical antiseptic, wet compress, incision and drain, antibiotics
- avoid lanolin and oily topical
Boil or furuncles
caused by the inflammation of hair follicles
Resulting in the localized accumulation of pus and dead tissues
Clusters called- carbuncles
Form abscesses
Impetigo
One or more pimple like lesion surrounded by reddened skin
Lesions fill with pus, then break down over 4-6 days and form a thick crust
Associated with insect bites, cuts, and other forms of trauma to skin
Itching is common
Psoriasis
Is condition whose main symptom is gray or silvery flaky patches on the skin which are red and inflamed underneath
Ulcer
Open sore of skin
Ulcer Merck Manual stage1
Skin is red, the underlying tissue is soft. The redness disappears with minor pressure
Ulcer Merck Manual stage2
There is redness, swelling and hardening of the skin around the area. Sometimes there is blistering. Sometimes there is loss of superficial skin
