skin terminology Flashcards
xerosis
dry skin
excoriation
self-inflicted abrasion (on skin due to scratching)
ulcer
deep depression, irregular shape, leaves a scar
scar
normal tissue lost & replaced with CT (e.g. healed area of surgery, injury, or acne)
atrophic scar
depressed resulting skin level, loss of tissue (e.g. striae)
dermis
inner supportive layer of CT or collagen
epidermis
outermost layer of skin, stratified
subcutaneous layer
“fat”, adipose tissue below dermis, stores ENERGY
nevi
moles
nevus simplex
“stork bite”/salmon patch, flat red/pink irregular patch (location: forehead, eyelid, upper lip, back of neck)
senile angiomas
raised red spots, appears on trunk (on 30yo+)
senile lentigines
“liver spots”, small flat circumscribed brown macules
acrochordons
“skin tags”, normal skin overgrows forming a stalk, polyp-like
petechiae
tiny purple/red flat spots (hemorrhaging) (1-3mm), does not blanch
purpura
dark red discolored areas, flat, extensive patch of petechiae
pallor
paleness, looks like CT
cyanosis
bluish discoloration (decreased perfusion), high in deoxygenated blood
erythema
intense redness (excess blood in dilated superficial capillaries)
jaundice
yellowing of skin (rising amounts of bilirubin in blood)
blanching
turning white, (blood supply is squeezed/cut off)
skin tear
break or rip in outer skin layer, separates epidermis from tissues
discrete
distinct & individual lesions (e.g. skin tags, acne)
target
‘iris”, concentric ring color
urticaria
itchy wheals (allergic reaction) (e.g. hives)
macule
flat, circumscribed, color change (e.g. freckles, nevi, petechiae)
papule
solid, circumscribed, elevated (<1cm -diameter) (e.g. pimple)
wheal
superficial, elevated, transient, erythematous, slightly irregular shape
nodule
solid, elevated, hard/soft, (>1cm) (e.g. fibroma, intradermal nevi)
vesicle
“blister”, elevated, free fluid cavity (<1cm) (e.g. herpes simplex, contact dermatitis)
cyst
encapsulated fluid-filled cavity (in dermis/fat layer), elevates skin (e.g. wen, sebaceous cyst)
patch
macules >1cm (e.g. café au lait spot, measles rash)
plaque
coalesced papules, surface elevation wider >1cm (e.g. psoriasis)
bulla
> 1cm in diameter, superficial, thin-walled, ruptures easily (e.g. burns, friction blister)
tumor
> few cm in diameter, firm/soft, deep (e.g. lipoma, hemangioma)
pustule
cloudy fluid (pus) in cavity, circumscribed, elevated (e.g. acne, impetigo)
crust
thickened & dried out exudate (vesicles/pustules burst/dry up) (e.g. scab after abrasion)
scale
compact desiccated flakes (dead skin cells shed)
erosion
scooped out, shallow depression
diaphoresis
profuse sweating
fissure
linear crack, abrupt edges, into dermis (e.g. athlete’s foot)
keloid
scar at site of wound, grows beyond normal boundaries, smooth, rubbery, shiny, “clawliike”
lichenification
thickened skin, tightly packed papules (intense scratching)
leukonychia striata
white lines, through nail bed
annular
circular, center to periphery (e.g. ringworm)
linear
scratch, streak, line, stripe
zosteriform
linear arrangement along nerve route (e.g. herpes zoster)
ecchymosis
bruise (meds from vein leak out into tissue)
contusion
bruise (blunt force trauma)
hypopigmentation
absence of pigment, light/white splotches
hyperpigmentation
darkened skin (excessive amounts of melanin)
pruritus
itchy skin
hirsutism
excessive hair growth
alopecia
hair loss, baldness
seborrhea
oily discharge
exudate
fluid accumulated in wound, contains: serum, cellular debris, bacteria, & wbcs
pedunculated
attached by stalk
confluent
run together
grouped
clusters
gyrate
twisted, coiled spiral, snakelike
