musculoskeletal terminology Flashcards
myalgia
cramping/aching in the muscles
subluxation
partial dislocation
synovial joints
freely moveable; joins bones or cartilage with a fibrous joint capsule
atrophy
decrease in size/wasting away of a body part or tissue
contracture
a permanent tightening of the muscles, tendons, skin, and nearby tissues that causes the joints to shorten and become very stiff
cartilaginous joints
a type of joint where the bones are entirely joined by cartilage, either hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
hypertrophy
an increase in the size of an organ, structure, or the body due to growth rather than tumor formation
ankylosis
immobility of a joint
fibrous joints
a type of joint where the bones are joined by strong fibrous tissue rich in collagen
effusion
an abnormal collection of fluid in hollow spaces or between tissues of the body
articular disease
a spectrum of conditions that range from acute forms of septic or sterile arthritis to chronic, often polyarticular conditions
muscle
a band or bundle of fibrous tissue in a human or animal body that has the ability to contract, producing movement in or maintaining the position of parts of the body
extra-articular disease
diseases and symptoms not directly related to the locomotor system (musculoskeletal system)
ligament
a fibrous connective tissue that attaches bone to bone, and usually serves to hold structures together and keep them stable
deformity
any sort of disfigurement or distortion that makes a part of the body a different size or shape than it would be normally
crepitation
crackling/grating sound (produced when fractured bone rub together)
tendons
tough, fibrous, cord-like tissue that connects muscle to bone or another structure
functional assessment
measures an individual’s level of function and ability to perform specific tasks on a safe and dependable basis over a defined period
range of motion (rom)
the extent or limit to which a part of the body can be moved around a joint or a fixed point
bursa
a closed, fluid-filled sac that works as a cushion and gliding surface to reduce friction between tissues of the body
fracture
a broken bone, or crack/break
subcutaneous nodules
a well circumscribed lump of tissue, firm to touch, typically non-tender, predominantly occurring as a cutaneous manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis localized to extensor surfaces near joints, but may be internal.
skeletal muscle
striated muscle that is usually attached to the skeleton and is usually under voluntary control
dislocation
separation of two bones where they meet at a joint
thenar eminence
fleshy part at the base of the thumb, made up of 3 muscles which control the movements of the thumb
ulnar deviation
due to inflammation in your hands, wrists, or fingers; fingers bend towards your pinkies
bogginess
abnormal texture of tissues characterized by sponginess, usually because of high fluid content
bulge sign
used to assess for an effusion of the knee joint, by attempting to move the fluid to one side of the knee
ballottement
a technique of feeling for a movable object in the body, esp confirmation of pregnancy by feeling the rebound of the fetus following a quick digital tap on the wall of the uterus
