Skin/soft tissue/ muscle parasites and arthropods. Flashcards
What disease is transmitted by female sandflies and what cell type does it live in?
Leishmania, which lives within macrophages.
What species of leishmania cause cutaneous lesions?
L. major, L. tropica, L. mexicana
found mostly within central and south america.
Typically self limiting infection but in mucocutaneous reinfectio occurs months to years later!
What leishmaniasis species causes the latent arising mucocutaneous infection?
L. braziliensis
What is the vector for Onchocerca volvulus involved in river blindness?
Black flies!
Found mostly in Africa with very little in South America.
“River Blindness”
How is Onchocerciasis diagnosed?
Skin snipping!
What is the treatment for Onchocerciasis?
Ivermectin repeated dosing.
Where is Mansonella found?
This is extremely rare and passed by midge flys.
Found in central Africa and some areas near America.
How is Dracunculus medinensis spread?
Spread by ingestin infected copepods in water Treated by wrapping large worm around stick.
How is cutaneous larva migrans contracted? Whats the name of the species?
Ancylostoma which is from dogs/cats.
The larvae penetrate skin of human by accident and burrow around causing extreme inflammatory reactions.
“Creeping eruption”
Describe Sarcoptes scabiei
Small round 8 legged arhropod (mite) from birds and animals that accidentally infect man causing superficial rashes.
Found typically in webs of skin and hands!
What is dermatobia hominis and how does it infect humans?
The Bot fly catches a mosquito and lays eggs on it. The mosquito transmits it to a human and the larvae develops in your skin!
What transmits Chaga disease?
Reduviid bug!
Can lead to congestive heart failure/megalocolon/megaesophagus in chronic infections!!!
Can effect heart muscle.
What is the vector for Trichinosis?
This is a worm trichenelis spiralis that is found encysted in under cooked pig meat
Think of hunter eating undercooked meat!
What are the symptoms of Trichinosis infection?
Encyst within muscles - Aches and pain in leg muscles -Perioribital edema - Heart Pt have very high eosinophil levels!
How is Trichinosis Diagnosed?
Elevated eosinophil count as well as elevated muscle enzyme levels CPK and LDH
