Lupus Erythematosus
Chronic, progressive, inflammatory disorder of connective tissues
Red rash with raised, red, scaly parques
2 kinds: discoid lupus and systemic lupus
Discoid lupus
Affects only skin with flare ups when exposed to sun too much
Lesions can resolve or cause atrophy, permanent scaring, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation
Systemic lupus
Chronic, systemic inflammatory disorder affecting multiple organ systems
Affects young women
Characteristics butterfly rash on bridge of nose, skin lesion, chronic fatigue, arthralgia, anemia, hair loss
No cure - Long term use of corticosteroid so monitor for side effects
PT: skin care, activity pacing, prevent deconditioning
Polymyositis and dermamyositis
Autoimmune myopathies characterized by edema inflammation and degeneration of proximal muscles
- can see muscle fiber damage with too intense exercise
- contractures and pressure injuries from too much bed rest
Exercise: aerobic and resistance at low levels are okay as long as fatigue and overload are avoided.
Ecchymosis
Bluish discoloration of skin caused by extravasation of blood into subcutaneous tissues
