Skin (organology) Flashcards
An aggregate of different tissues working together for a definite function
Organ
The study of organs
Organology
The largest organ in the body
Skin
Composed of epithelial cells
This is the outermost part of the skin
Epidermis
Made up of connective tissue fibers
The innermost layer of the skin
Dermis
Enumerate 2 the epidermis layers
1) Stratum Corneum
2) Stratum Germinativum
The outermost part of the epidermis
Composed of SQUAMOUS CELLS which eventually die and shed off after some time
Provides a barrier to the outside
Stratum Corneum
Composed of cells that are CUBOIDAL in shape
The innermost part of the epidermis
Separates the epidermis from the dermis
Stratum germinativum (or stratum basale)
These are found in the skin of animals and contain pigment that can change color and pattern.
Chromatophores
Enumerate the two regions of the dermis
1) Stratum spongiosum
2) Stratum compactum
Middle layer of the dermis
Composed of loosely arranged CONNECTIVE TISSUE. They possess cavities representing the cutaneous glands
Blood vessels and nerves are also found here
Stratum Spongiosum
The innermost, thick horizontal layer of the dermis
PARALLEL to the epidermis
Stratum Compactum
