Blood vessels (organology) Flashcards
Through this, blood flow is distributed to all parts of the body
Blood vessels
Enumerate the 3 types of blood vessels
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
They connect arteries and veins
This blood vessel is very small and thin walled, made up of only a single layer of SQUAMOUS cells
Capillaries
a type of blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart to various parts of the body.
Arteries
What are the 3 layers of the arteries and veins
1) Tunica Externa (tunica adventitia)
2) Tunica media
3) Tunica interna (tunica intima)
This blood vessel layer is composed of loosely arranged CONNECTIVE TISSUE.
Fibers are arranged LONGITUDINALLY
Provides structural support and protection to the vessel
Some FIBROCYTES are present here
Tunica Externa or Tunica Adventitia
This blood vessel layer is the THICKEST of all layers
Consists of SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS
Arranged in a CIRCULAR manner
Contributes to the control of blood pressure and blood flow
Tunica Media
The thinnest and innermost layer
Composed of SMOOTH MUSCLE CELLS
Elastic fibers are arranged LONGITUDINALLY
Maintains the integrity and functionality of blood vessels
Tunica interna or Tunica intima
Composed of thin sheets of squamous cells
Forms the lining of the lumen
form a smooth, continuous lining along the interior surface of the blood vessel
Endothelium
This is the hollow portion of the vessel
