Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
This is the branch of science that deals with tissues.
Histology
This tissue is composed of closely packed sheets of cells that cover the surface of the body or one of its cavities.
RENEWABLE PACKED SHEETS OF CELLS.
Epithelial Tissue
What are the SIDES of the epithelial tissue?
Apical
Basal
This side is exposed to air and body flluids.
Apical
This side rests against a non-cellular layer produced by the epithelial tissue, and and against a CONNECTIVE tissue called the BASEMENT membrane.
Basal
Underlying connective tissue.
Basement membrane
What are the vital functions of the epithelial tissue?
Protection, absorption, secretion and producing a surface for DIFFUSION
tiny, finger-like projections made up of cells that line the entire length of your small intestine
Villi
What is the VILLI lined with?
Columnar Epithelium
These cells secrete mucus for the small intestine. They are cup shaped in appearance.
Goblet cells
What is the thyroid gland lined by?
Cuboidal epithelium cells
The skin is an example, and is line by:
Stratified Squamous Keratinizing Epithelium
A protein that helps form hair, nails, and the epidermis
Keratin
What is the urinary bladder lined with?
Transitional Epithelium
These are formed by cells specialiazied to produce secretion molecules. Examples are the glands.
Specialized Epithelia (or modified epithelia)
