What are skin markings
Small visible lines in epidermis created by interaction between dermis and epidermis; best seen in thick skin
What are dermal ridges
areas where dermal papillae are more prominent due to presence of thick collagen bundles
What is the reticular layer response for in skin markings
Tension (cleavage) lines and flexure lines
What are tension (cleavage) lines
tension (cleavage) lines: indentations in epidermis from gaps between collagen bundles in dermis
What are flexure lines
Flexure lines: deep creases in areas of body (surrounding joints) where reticular layer is tightly anchored in deeper structures
What do dermal ridges do
-it indents epidermis to create epidermal ridges; enhance gripping ability of hands and feet: happens in loops, arches, and whorls, sweat pores open along ridges and leaves fingerprint
