A
-mitosis occurs in matrix
-cells divide and push cells above them farther away from bloody supply; keratinize and die
-varies in duration from 1 month to 6 years; depends on location of hair

A
-mitosis in matrix ends as cells die
-follicle shortens; hair id pushed toward surface where it remains dormant for a month or two
-falls out on its own or is pushed out by new hair in growth stage
