-distal edge of the fold is eponychium (cuticle)

What does medial and lateral nail folds consist of
-attached to nail bed by accumulation of stratum corneum called hyponychium
Where does nail growth occur
It occurs in the matrix
What happens during nail growth
-dividing cells push neighboring cells distally
-die once keratinization is completed and have been cut off from blood supply
-grows 0.5 mm perk week, toenails grow more slowly
What is the primary function of nails
-protects underlying tissue (distal tips of fingers and toes) from trauma
-can be used as tools
-precise gripping of itema
