Glands Flashcards
What are the basic types of glands does the skin contain
-sweat (sudoriferous) glands: produce sweat
-sebaceous glands: produce oily sebum
What are the 4 types of sweat glands
Eccrine, Apocrine, ceruminous, and mammary glands
Describe eccrine gland
-most prevalent type
-simple coiled tubular glands in dermis
-sweat mostly contains water, waste products, and electrolytes
-exists from duct through sweat pore onto epidermal surface
-
Describe aprocrine gland
-found in axillae, anal area, and areola
-large glands
-rich protein; releases protein-rich secretion to hair follicles
-influeced by sex hormones; becomes active after puberty
Describe ceruminous gland
-modified apocrine gland
-releases cerumen (ear wax) into hair follicles in ear
-traps incoming particles along tube leading to tympanic membrane; also lubricates
Describe mammary gland
-highly specialized sweat gland
-produces modified sweat (milk)
What is Sebaceous gland
-secretes sebum (oil)
-found everywhere on body except palms and soles; a lot on face and scalp
-secretion influenced by sex hormones, especially testosterone
-a lot of sebum production occurs after puberty
What is sebum
Waxy, oily mixture of mostly lipids
Released by holocrine secretion
Secretory cells accumulate sebum until cell ruptures
What are the functions of sebum
Has lipids, cellular fragments, and debris
Coats hair, provides hydrophobic barrier; inhibits water loss
Inhibits growth of or kills certain bacteria
