What are the two emollients and what are the difference between the two?
Crème- emulsion of oil and water
Ointment- emulsion with more oil than water (more solid)
What is lotion?
Liquid suspension of solid ingredients
What are astringents?
used for drying effect, particularly on exudative lesions
What is powder good to use for?
PREVENT moisture but not good if already present because it creates paste
What is paste?
Semi-solid, made from powder
What are patches good for?
Systemic purposes, topical
What are keralytics and what are they good at treating?
dissolve keratin; used in treating warts, corns, calluses, seborrheic dermatitis.
What two things is mupriocin good at treating?
MRSA and impetigo
What treats herpes simplex? 3 drugs and which one they are used for?
Acyclovir- mouth
Valacyclovir- genital
Famciclovir- both
What is isotretinoin and important considerations regarding it?
Acne medication
Must use two types of birth control and requires pregnancy test (EXTREMELY TERATOGENIC)
What medications or solutions should you watch for allergies?
Silver- sulfa allergies
Betadine or iodine- shellfish allergies
What is used for yeast infections?
Nystatin
What is used for parasites?
Permethrin
What is a diabetes medication that is also used for psoriasis?
glitazones
Also use steroids, etanercept, adalimumab, apremilast
