What are the erectile dysfunction medications and how do they work?
“Afil” family (sildenafil and tadalafil)
Vasodilate the penis
What medication do you not want to give with erectile dysfunction? Why?
Nitrates- lower BP can cause severe hypotension
What are the side effects of testosterone? How does it effect the cardiovascular system?
Mood swings, baldness, increase prostate growth (BPH or cancer), testicular shrinkage
Cardio- retention of na/water increases BP and hyperlipidemia
What is methotrexate used for?
Ectopic pregnancy THAT HAS NOT RUPTURED
What is levonorgestrel?
Morning after pill
What hormone is found in injectable birth control? How often do you take it?
Medroxyprogesterone – IM every three months
What is most contraindicated for someone taking estrogen and who is most vulnerable?
Nictotine/smoking
Women, over 35, taking estrogen for any reason
Increases clotting so increase risk for stroke
What medication prevents recurrence of breast cancer?
Tamoxifen
What two medications specifically help osteoporosis?
Bisphosphonates (“dronate” family) and Calcitonin-salmon
What are the ADRs for bisphosphonates?
Severe esophagitis
Drink water 30 min before meals, meds, drinks
Remain up right 30 minutes after eating
