skin color and aging Flashcards
skin color is determined by what three pigments
hemoglobin, melanin, and carotene
hemoglobin
pigment found in blood
melanin
brown pigment of skin caused by sun
carotene
-yellow-orange pigment from foods such as carrots
-builds up in the subcutaneous layer
some causes of abnormal skin colors
-lack of melanin production
-sunburn, excess heat
-trauma
-decreased blood flow to the skin
the predominant skin cancer risk factor
chronic sun exposure
three main types of skin cancer
basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma
basal cell carcinoma
-most common
-least dangerous
-starts in stratum basale
squamous cell carcinoma
-may metastasize
-starts in stratum spinosum
malignant melanoma
-highest mortality rate
-spreads to deeper tissue
-starts in melanocytes
aging of the integument with age:
-skin repair takes longer
-collagen content decreases and elasticity declines
-immune responsiveness diminishes
-skin becomes drier and less sweat is produced
-altered skin pigmentation
-hair follicle output declines
-vitamin D synthesis decreases
-UV radiation damages skin cell DNA
