Skin Care Flashcards
UV light
High energy radiation which causes skin damage
- Sun blocks
2. Sun screens
- Reflects UV Ray’s, contains titanium dioxide
2. Contains chemicals which act as UV filters for skin
Free Radicals
Atoms with unpaired electrons which make them very reactive and cause damage to skin
Free Radical Chain Reaction (formation of free radicals)
Initiation- results in two free radicals
Propagation- results in 1 free radical
Termination- removes all free radicals formed during reaction
Free Radical Scavengers
Antioxidants which prevent free radical chain reactions taking place and prevent any damage to cells in body
Free Radical Scavengers in cosmetics
Compounds in Vit C, Vit E
Polyphenols effective at being absorbed by dermis and epidermis
Free Radical Scavengers in plastics
Known as ‘UV stabilisers’, free radical scavengers are added to plastics to stop O reacting with C’s and prevent degradation
Free Radial Scavengers in foods
Vit C, Vit E, more effective as ingested and Polyphenols (flavonoids)
