Definitions Flashcards
Enthalpy
All the stored energy in a chemical, given by symbol H
Pure Covalent Bonding
Where the shared pair of electrons are shared equally by the atoms in the molecule
Polar Covalent Bonding
Unequal sharing of the bonded electrons, creates a permanent dipole
Electronegativity
Assesses an elements ability to attract bonding electrons
Ionisation Energy
Energy required to remove an electron from every atom in a mole of atoms in its gaseous state
Monatomic molecules
Substances that exist as individual non-bonded atoms
Enthalpy of Combustion
Enthalpy change when 1 mole of a substance burns complete in its standard state
Enthalpy of formation
Enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states
Oxidising agent
Accepts electrons from a reactant and so oxidises it
Reducing agent
Supplies reactant with electrons therefore reducing it
