Actinic Keratoses:
pre-cancerous lesion
feel like sandpaper and a tender when touched.
could develop into SCC or BCC
tx: liquid nitrogen cyrotherapy or topical therapies such as
-5-FU
-Imiquimod
Non-melanoma Skin Cancers
- basal cell carcinoma
- squamous cell carcinoma
- merkel cell carcinoma
- cutaneous t-cell lymphoma
Describe BCC:
IT IS THE MOST FREQUENT SKIN CANCER!!! Metastases are rare. PEARLY papule, erythematous patch >6mm or non healing ulcer with a history of bleeding–> ARBORIZING VESSELS (surface telangiectasisas)
tx: elecrodessication and curettage, surgical excision, radiation therapy, topical therapy
When might you use Mohs surgery?
recurrent cancer
cancers of the face, hands feet, genatalia of high cosmetic importance.
describe SCC:
may arise from ACTINIC KERATOSIS.
non healing, warty
several forms:
1. bowen’s- in situ
2. erythroplasia of queyrat: on the penis
3. keratocanthoma = low grade, raised nodule with KERATIN PLUG.
4. cutaneous horn
tx: effudex or aldara, liquid nitrogen, radiation therapy, curettage, surgical excision.
malignant melanoma:
ABCDEs of melanoma a = asymetry b= border c= color d= diamter (>6mm) e = elevation
also graded using breslow’s
CTCL:
mycosis fungoides most common type!
NO CURE, but normal life expectancy
Leukemi form is known as “Sezary syndrome”
-tend to be diagnosed in 5-6th decade of life.
-multiple stages involved, patch, plaque, and tumor stage.
may take multiple biopsies.
