Skin and Mucous Membranes Flashcards
what are the three layers of the skin
epidermis
dermis
subcutaneous layer
what are the 5 layers of the epidermis
stratum basale - basal layer where cell division occurs
stratum spinosum - spiny appearance due to appearance of desmosomes
stratum granulosum - grainy appearance
stratum lucidum - only in thick skin (heels and palms)
stratum corneum - dry , dead layer of keratin
What 4 cells are found within the epidermis
melanocytes - produce melanin
Merkel cells - sensory receptors, give brain reception of touch
langerhans cells - APCS
keratinocytes - majority, form keratin
what are the 2 layers of the dermis
papillary layer - directly below epidermis , projects into stratum basal
reticular layer - contains glands
mucous membranes
specialised epithelial lining that produce a lubricate fluid
found anywhere with opening to external environment e.g mouth, respiratory tract
what does the lubricating fluid produced by mucous membranes contain and why
mucin to trap microbes and dirt particles
what are the two layers of mucous membranes
epithelium and lamina propria which are separated by a basement membrane
rete ridges
epithelium projections into underlying connective tissues in both skin and mucous membranes
