Glands Flashcards
glands
epithelial cells that produce secretions
endocrine glands
produce hormones released into interstitial fluid which then enter blood stream
humoral regulation of hormone secretion
blood borne molecules e.g glucose stimulates insulin secretion
neural regulation of hormone secretion
neurons stimulate hormone production
hormonal regulation of hormone secretion
hormone secretion stimulates another hormone to be released
thyroid gland
endocrine , located in front of the trachea , produces thyroxine which regulates metabolism
parathyroid gland
endocrine, parathyroid hormone secreted by chief cells which regulates blood calcium levels
exocrine glands
release secretions into ducts which open out onto epithelial surface
how are exocrine glands classified
either by there structure or their method of secretion
what are the different structures of exocrine glands
uni cellular or multicellular
merocrine method of secretion
vesicles release secretion directly into duct from intact cells (salivary glands)
apocrine method of secretion
secretion released into duct along with a portion of the cell
holocrine method of secretion
entire cell released alongside secretion
what are the three major salivary glands and there secretions
parotid - serous
submandibular - mixed
sublingual - mucous
