Skin Flashcards
List the order of tissues in skin
stratum cornea - epidermis - papillary dermis - reticular dermis - hypodermis - subcutis
Recall the features in skin
basement membrane
keratinocytes in different layers
apendigeal structures: pilo subaceous unit
hair follicles
hair shafts
sebaceous gland - release sebem - oily
pilo errector muscle
apocrine and eccrine glands - sweat
meissner’s corpuscles - nerve ending involved in sensation
collagen
fibroblasts
langerhans cell - APC
merkel cell - sensory - on basement membrane
melanocyte - dendritic - on basement membrne
What are skin’s functions
biggest organ protective - infection/wound /radiation/UV vitamin D production sensory organ thermoregulation waterproof cosmetics
How is the integrity of skin maintained
The epidermis and dermis are joined by hemidesmosomes and tonofilaments which are cell junctions
If these proteins are affected it casues the skin to blister
How do melanocytes develop
dendritic cell
Have vacuoles in them
what is the function of melanocytes
produce melanin - protects keratinocyte’s DNA from UV radiation
how are melanocytes regulated
UV radiation
keratinocytes release melanocyte stimulating hormone
melanocytes produce melanin in melanosome
moves via dendritic processes to keratinocytes
