Flexibility
This is a leadership style illustrated by a leader who takes total control, assumes full authority, and takes full responsibility for the area managed.
It is best exemplified by the military model, where the orders are carried out when and as issued; any questions are asked after the fact. This management style is often described as a traditional male management model, though male gender is not requisite to using this method. Men seem to have more success when using this model than do women.
Autocratic Leadership
This is a commonly used leadership style in which the leader gathers information and seeks the opinion of colleagues and/or subordinates before taking action. An advantage of using participative leadership is that one has a variety of ideas from which to work and is likely to make errors relative to insufficient evidence or narrow perspectives.
Participative Leadership
A leadership style based on “majority rules”, in which decisions are made by the group rather than by the manager alone. The hypothesis behind using the democratic leadership technique is that if people agree with a decision, there is an increased likelihood that these individuals will actively work to make the outcome successful. When used effectively, this techniques enhances the probability of reaching a good decision and improves the success rate relative to outcomes.
Democratic Leadership
A leadership style that requires that decisions are made by a group and is based on all members working together until agreement is reached. Consensus management is the type of management most often associated with women managers. Consensus requires that every member of the group must agree with action that will be taken. The group must work together until all members reach agreement.
