3 subcategories of classifying skill
Movement precision, type of movement, predictability of environment
What is a serial motor skill?
Several discrete skills are performed in a sequence such as a gymnastics floor routine.
What is a fine motor skill?
Involves the recruitment of smaller muscle associated with movement requiring precision. (Darts, tennis serve)
What is a gross motor skill?
Involves the recruitment of large muscle groups, not as much precision
Defintion of cognitive stage ?
The beginner is mentally trying to comprehend the movement requirement of the motor skill
Defintion of associative stage ?
The performer is beginning to refine their technique/movement pattern. They are more consistent with their movement. Most people stay at this stage
Defintion of autonomous stage ?
The skill is now automatic, the performer is no longer consciously thinking about the skill. The performer now has time to read opposition movement
3 characteristics of a skilled performance
Good technique, little errors, minimum of effort
