Skeleton Flashcards

1
Q

What is the axial skeleton?

A

made up of the 80 bones within the central core of your body and is composed of 6 parts.
This includes bones in your skull, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone, the ribcage, sternum and the vertebral column. protects and cushions your brain, spinal cord and organs.

17
Q

What are the functions of the skeleton?

A

Provides support, form and structure to the body,
Protects the internal organs,
Produces red and white blood cells and platelets, which are formed in bone marrow,
Acts as a store for calcium and phosphorus
Facilitates movement, thus enabling the body to perform physical work using bones and joints as levers

Provides surfaces for attachments of tendons and muscles
