What is the axial skeleton?
made up of the 80 bones within the central core of your body and is composed of 6 parts.
This includes bones in your skull, the ossicles of the middle ear, the hyoid bone, the ribcage, sternum and the vertebral column. protects and cushions your brain, spinal cord and organs.
What is the end of long bones called?
Epiphysis (spongey bone)
What is the diaphysis of bones?
The long, central, tube like shaft of long bones (it contains the medullary cavity, which is surrounded by a compact bone periosteum.)
What is compact bone?
Dense, strong bone tissue found on the outer layer of bones
What is spongy bone?
Lighter, porous bone tissue found at the ends of bones and in the middle
What is Periosteum in a bone?
Membrane covering the surface of bones
What are some examples of bones that make up the Appendicular skeleton?
The femur, humerus, ulna, radius, tibia
What is the process of bone formation called?
Bone ossification

What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Support the body and maintain its shape, Protect internal organs, produce red blood cells
