Skeleton Flashcards
What is part of the axial skeleton
Skull, vertebral column, thoracic cage
What do cranial bones do
Enclose brain, head, neck muscles
What is the hole for passage of spinal cord and where does it articulate
Foramen Magnum
articulate with 1st vertebra via occipital condyles
What are the 3 regions of the temporal bone
Squamous, petrous, tympanic
What are the 3 parts of sphenoid bone
Lesser wings, greater wings, pterygoid processes
What is the deepest skull bone
Ethmoid bone
What is the only freely movable skull joint
temporomandibular joint
What does the alveolar processes do
Holds upper teeth
What does the pterion suture hold?
frontal, parietal, temporal, sphenoid bones
What is the nucleus pulposus for? What surrounds it?
Inner gel-like nucleus that gives intervertebral discs its elasticity & compressibility
Annulus fibrosus: collage & fibrocartilage
How many bones are in each part of the vertebral column
Cervical: 7
Thoracic: 12
Lumbar: 5
Sacrum: 5 fused
Coccyx: 3-5 fused
What are the curvatures of vertebral column
2 convex (primary) thoracic, sacrum
2 concave (secondary) cervical, lumbar
What is C1 and C2 and what is it used for
C1: atlas; holding our head (helps nod)
C2: Axis; helps with shaking head no (atlas rotation)
What is part of the sternum ? Where does each articulate?
Manubrium (ribs 1-2), Sternal body (ribs 2-7), xiphoid process
Where are the True, False, and floating ribs
True: 1-7
False: 8-10 (attach to 7)
Floating: 11-12 (no attachment)
