Skeletal System and types of bones Flashcards
acts as a scaffold by providing
support and protection for the soft tissues that
make up the rest of the body
The skeleton
Includes all of the bones and joints in the body
The skeletal system
Parts of the skeletal system
1.Bones
2.Joints
3.cartilages
4.Ligaments
Subdivision of skeleton
1.Axial Skeleton
2.Appendicular Skeleton
Bones are classified on the basis of shape into four groups
- Long
- Flat
- Short
- Irregular
Is a shape of a bone that is typically longer than they are wide
has shaft with enlarged ends. Contain mostly compact bone; spongy bone at
ends.
-Involves all of the bones of the limbs
Long bone
Example of long bones
-Femur
-Humerus
Is a shape of a bone which is thin, flattened, and usually curved.
-Two thin layers of compact bone sandwich a layer of spongy bone between them
Flat bone
Examples of flat bones
- Sternum
- Ribs
Generally cube-shaped
and Contain mostly spongy bone with an outer layer of compact bone
Are Sesamoid bones
A type of short bone that form within
tendons.
Short boned
Example of short bones
Carpals and Tarsals
-Irregular shape
-Do not fit into other bone classification categories
Irregular Bones
Functions of bones
-Support the body
- Protect soft organs
-Attached skeletal muscles
-Blood cell formation (hematopoiesis)
The adult has how many bones
206
Compact bone
Dense, smooth, and homogeneous
