Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the function of the skeleton?
Support Protection Movement Shape Production of red blood cells&mineral salt storage
What are the types of joints? Examples?
Ball and socket-hip and shoulder
Pivot-Atlas and axis at the neck
Hinge-knee, elbow and ankle
Condyloid-wrist
What are tendons and ligaments?
Tendons-attach bone to muscle
Ligaments-attach bone to bone
What are synovial joints?
Allow free movement. They have common features but differ in structure, allowing a range of motion
What are the planes of movement?
Sagittal
Horizontal
Frontal
Outline the sagittal plane
- cuts body into left and right sections
- flexion and extension occurs
- plantar flexion and dorsiflexion occur
- movements occur parallel to plane
Outline the horizontal plane
•rotation occurs in horizontal plane •lateral & medial rotation (lateral rotation occurs away from the midline of the body, medial occurs towards) •pronation and supination •horizontal adduction and abduction
Outline the frontal plane
•cuts the body into front and back
•adduction and abduction occur
•lateral flexion, inversion, eversion, elevation and depression all occur
(Lateral flexion is bending the trunk sideways away from midline)
(Inversion&eversion-kicking phase of breaststroke)
