External&internal Respiration Flashcards
Where does external respiration take place?
Lungs
What are involved in external respiration?
Alveoli and blood
Where does oxygen and carbon dioxide move from and to during external respiration?
O2-from alveoli to blood
CO2-from blood to alveoli
How does CO2 move?
There is a higher ppCO2 in the blood than alveoli, so CO2 travels down the diffusion gradient to the alveoli
How does O2 move?
There is a higher ppO2 in the alveoli than blood, so the O2 travels down the diffusion gradient into the blood
Where does internal respiration occur?
In the muscles
What are involved in internal respiration?
Muscles and blood
Where does O2 and CO2 move from and to in internal respiration?
O2-blood to muscles
CO2-muscles to blood
How does O2 move in internal respiration?
There is a higher ppO2 in the blood than muscles, so O2 travels down the diffusion gradient into the muscles
How does CO2 move in internal respiration?
There is a higher CO2 in the misled than blood, so CO2 travels down the diffusion gradient to the blood
Define Gaseous Exchange
The movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide at the lungs and at the muscles by the process of diffusion
What is diffusion?
The move my of a gas down a diffusion gradient from an area of high partial pressure to low partial pressure
What is diffusion gradient?
The difference between the areas of high pressure and low pressure
What is partial pressure (pp)?
The pressure a gas exerts within a mixture of gases
