Appendicular skeleton
Bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton.
Skeletal system
Muscle composed of cylindrical multinucleate cells with obvious striations; the muscle(s) attached to the body’s skeleton; also called voluntary muscle.
Compact bone
Dense and looks smooth and homogenous.
Spongy bone
Composed of small needle like pieces of bone and lots of open space.
Diaphysis
Elongated shaft of a long bone.
Periosteum
Double-layered connective tissue that covers and nourishes the bone.
Epiphyses
The end of a long bone.
Articulate cartilage
Glassy hyaline cartilage; slippery cartilage that decreases friction at joint surfaces.
Epiphyseal plate
A flat plate of hyaline cartilage.
Yellow marrow
Fat storage in adults.
Red marrow
Produces blood cells found in child bones.
Osteocytes
Bone cells.
Lacunae
Cavities in the bond that store the osteocytes.
Lamellar
A ring in the bone.
Osteon
Unit of bone (Haversian system).
