Respiratory System Flashcards
Paranasal sinuses
Lighten the skull, and they act as resonance chambers for speech.
Pharynx
The muscular tube extending from the posterior of the nasal cavities to the esophagus.
Trachea
The windpipe; the respiratory tube extending from larynx to bronchi.
Bronchi
The large branches of the trachea leading to the lungs.
Lungs
An organ pair within the rib cage; air drawn in to bring oxygen to the blood and carbon dioxide removed.
Bronchioles
The small branches into which a bronchiol divides; inside of the lungs.
Alveoli
Sacs within lungs; allow oxygen/carbon dioxide to move between lungs and bloodstream.
Breathing (pulmonary ventilation)
Process that moves air in and out of lungs.
Diaphragm
Any partition/wall separating one area from another; a muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity.
External intercostals
Muscles that are attached to the ribs and involved in breathing.
Tidal volume
Amount of air inhaled or exhaled with a normal breath.
COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases)
Diseases that are involved with the respiratory system. (Examples: emphysema, chronic bronchitis, etc.)
Chronic bronchitis
The mucosa of the lower respiratory passages become severely inflamed; produces excessive amounts of mucus.
Emphysema
A condition caused by overdistension of the pulmonary alveoli and fibrosis of lung tissue.
Asthma
Disease or allergic response characterized by bronchial spasms and difficult breathing.
