Brain Parts Flashcards
Broca’s area
Specialized area in the frontal lobe involved in your ability to speak, damage to this area causes an inability to say words properly.
Central nervous system
Part of the nervous system that includes the brain and the spinal cord
Central sulcus
A deep groove that separates the frontal from the parietal lobe.
Cerebellum
Part of the brain that coordinates voluntary muscle movements.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
A watery fluid made from the blood in the ventricles of the brain, surrounds the brain and spinal cord to create a cushion and protect the brain from trauma.
Cerebrum
Largest part of the brain, broken into four lobes.
Corpus callosum
Band of nerves that connects the two hemispheres of the cerebrum.
Frontal lobe
Lobe of the cerebrum that is responsible for voluntary movement, emotions, speech, problem solving, and planning.
Gyri
Ridges of the cerebrum.
Hemisphere
Half of the cerebrum.
Integration
One of three main functions of the nervous system; process and interpret the sensory input and make decisions that effects a response.
Motor output
One of the three main functions of the nervous system; a response that activates muscles or glands.
Occipital lobe
Lobe of the cerebrum that is responsible for vision.
Parietal lobe
Lobe of the cerebrum that is responsible for speech comprehension, sensory area for pain, pressure, touch and temperature.
Peripheral nervous system
Part of the nervous system that includes all of the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord.
