Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal muscles
Muscle composed of cylindrical multinucleate cells with obvious striations; aka voluntary muscle.
Smooth muscle
Muscle consisting of spindle-shaped, unstriated muscle cells; involuntary muscle.
Cardiac muscle
Specialized muscle of the heart.
Tendon
Cord of dense fibrous tissue attaching a muscle to a bone.
Endomysium
The thin connective tissue surrounding each muscle wall.
Perimysium
The connective tissue enveloping bundles of muscle fibers.
Epimysium
The sheath of fibrous tissue surrounding a muscle.
Myofibril
Contractile organelles found in the cytoplasm of muscle cells.
Sarcomere
The smallest contractile unit of muscle; extends from one disc to the next.
Myofilament
Filaments composing the myofibrils; 2 types: actin and myosin.
Thick filaments
Made of bundled molecule of the protein myosin; contains enzymes to power contractions.
Thin filaments
Composed of the contractile protein actin, plus some regulatory proteins that allow/prevent myosin head-burning actin.
Crossbridges
Link the thick and thin filaments together during contraction.
Motor unit
One neuron and the skeletal muscles that it stimulates.
