Skeletal System Flashcards
What 2 minerals do the bones stores release and absorb?
Calcium and phosphate
Bone
A fibrous connective tissue. Hardened due to calcium phosphate. They are long short ( carpals of wrist)and flat(skull)
Compact bone
3/4 outer region of the bone attaches to muscle. Strong and dense
Spongy bones
1/4 inner region enclosed by compact bone. Rich in blood vessels
Epiphyseal plate
Composed of cartilage. Site where bones grow for babies and adolescents.
Cartilage
Connective tissue. Provides padding.
When 2 boys join together it is called?
A joint. This is covered by cartilage
Which organs are supported by cartilage?
The ear and the larynx
Ligament
Joins bone to bone. Allows bone move to one another while remaining attached.
Tendon
Joins muscles to bone
Skeletal system responsible for
Support and movement. Protection. Rbc formation. Storage of minerals.
Home many bones in an adult
206
Number of bones in a newborn
- And we get older bones fuse together
Axial skeleton
Central supporting axis of the body. Protects central nervous system
Skull rib stermuum spine coccyx
Skull
Protects the brain.
Vertebral column
Protectes the spinal cord. Supports skull and trunk. Allows movement. 33 bones
Invertebral disc
A cartilaginous pad between the bodies of two adjacent vertebrae
Joins vertebrae together
Enhances the spinal flexibility
Scoliosis
Lateral curvature. Exaggerated spinal curvature at the lower region of the vertebral column
Kyphosis
Hunchback
An exaggerated spinal curvature at the upper region of the vertebral column
Lordosis
Abnormal spinal curvature at the lower region of the vertebral column
Thoracic cage
Ribs and sternum . 12 pairs of rib bones
Intercostal muscles
Lies between each rib
Clavicle
The collorbone. Lateral end flat. Medial side round.
Upper limb
Humerous, radius, ulna
