Circulatory System Flashcards
Blood composed of?
A connective tissue composed of plasma, liquid, water, salts, nutrients, toxins, gases
Red blood cell
Erythrocytes. Produced in the bone marrow. Lacks a nucleus. Contains a protein called hemoglobin.
Short life span
Hemoglobin
Binds and carries up to 4 molecules of oxygen. Gives the color of red. Contains iron
Oxygenated blood
Bright red color
Deoxygenated blood
Dark red color
Who collects old and damaged red blood cells?
Liver and spleen. Breaks down rbc to release iron. Blood carries iron back to the bone marrow where it is used to make more hemoglobin and packaged into a new rbc.
Blood vessels
Blood is delivered to all the tissues in the body by the blood vessels
Artery
Carries blood away from the heart. Thicker wall
Arteriole
Smaller artery
Circulatory system
Transports blood throughout the body and exchange of gases between the blood and tissues.
Vein
Carries blood to the heart. Thinner wall
Venule
Smaller vein
Capillary
Smallest blood vessel
Percentage of where blood is in the body
30% in arteries, 5% in capillaries and 65% in the veins
Aorta
Largest artery
Largest vein
Superior vena cava
Heart
Muscular pump that forces blood through branching series of vessels to the lungs and rest of body.
Pulmonary circulation
Blood flows from the right side to the heart to the lungs then back to the heart
Systematic circulation
Blood flows from the left side of the heart to the rest of the body then back to the heart
Atria chamber
Upper chamber. Thin walled. Receive blood from the veins
Ventricle chamber
Lower chamber. Thick walled. Pump blood out of the heart
Valves
Controls blood flow through the heart
Atrioventricular valves
Allows blood to flow from the atria Into the ventricles
2 types-
Tricuspid valve - right
Bicuspid valve- left
Semilunar valves
Ensures blood to travel from the ventricles to the arteries
2 types -
Pulmonary semilunar - right
Aortic semilunar - left
