Skeletal System Flashcards
Main shaft of bone. Made mostly of compact bone
Diaphysis
Center of diaphysis. Hollow to decrease weight.
Medullary Canal
Membrane that lines the medullary canal
Endosteum
Responsible for bone resorption
Osteoclasts
Flared part at end of diaphysis. Supports epiphysis.
Metaphysis
Thin fibrous membrane covering all of the bone except articular surfaces
Periosteum
At ends of long bones. Where they receive pressure from opposing bones making up the joint
Pressure epiphysis
Very large prominence for muscle attachment
Trochanter
Where tendons attach to bones. Subject to pulling or traction forces
Traction Epiphysis
Area at end of long bone
Epiphysis
Flat or shallow articular surface
Facet
Canal or tubelike opening
Meatus
Large, rounded projection
Tuberosity
Small, rounded projection
Tubercle
Ditch like groove containing a tendon or blood vessel
Groove
Hollow or depression
Fossa
Long, thin projection
Spine
Hole through which blood vessels, nerves, and ligaments pass
Foramen
Less prominent ridge
Line
prominence above or on a condyle
Epicondyle
Sharp ridge or border
Crest
Rounded articular projection beyond a narrow neck like portion of bone
Head
Projecting, prominent part of bone
Eminence
Rounded knuckle like projection
Condyle
Air filled cavity within a bone
Sinus
Covers end of bones. Can’t repair itself. No blood supply. Gets nutrition from synovial fluid
Hyaline (Articular) cartilage
Acts as shock absorber. Poor blood supply.
Fibrocartilage
Similar to fibrocartilage but more flexible
Elastic cartilage
