Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the three functions of the skeletal system?
movement, support, protection.
Why is protection important for the skeletal system? Give a sporting example?
Example: Your cranium protects your brain if an opponent follows through wildly with their hockey stick and it hits you in the head during the game.
Why is support important? Give a sporting example?
Your skeleton provides a frame for your body and supports you. For example, it enables you to balance when performing a handstand in Gymnastics.
Why is movement important? Give a sporting example?
Bones act as levers. Levers allow the body to increase the force they generate or increase the speed of the movement. For example, a tennis player with longer levers will generate more force on the serve.
What are the two types of joints in the skeletal system?
Hinge, ball and socket.
Where is the hinge joint located and what is the movement?
Knee and elbow.
Flexion and extension.
Where is the ball and socket joint located and what is the movement?
hip and shoulder.
flexion, extension, rotation, adduction, abduction
Can you demonstrate the action for ‘abduction’.
The movement of a limb away from the mid-line of the body.
Can you demonstrate the action for ‘adduction’.
The movement of a limb towards the mid-line of the body.
What is meant by a weight-bearing activity? Can you give an example?
Activities that force your body to work against gravity.
What are the four different types of fractures?
Simple, compound, greenstick, stress
Give an example of an ‘overuse injury’ with a sporting example?
Tennis elbow- Repetitive use when performing a backhand in tennis can damage the tendons, resulting in tennis elbow.
