Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the immediate effects of exercise on the respiratory system?
Increase in breathing rate, increase in depth of breathing, increase in the removal of carbon dioxide, tidal volume increases.
Can you explain the term ‘oxygen debt’?
The amount of extra oxygen required AFTER anaerobic exercise. This DOES NOT happen during aerobic activity.
What are the effects of smoking on the respiratory system?
Reduction in oxygen uptake by the red blood cells- they will carry carbon monoxide from the cigarette smoke in preference to oxygen.
What are the long term effects of regular training on the respiratory system?
increased number of alveoli, increased strength of the diaphragm, increase lung volume (increased tidal volume and vital capacity).
What is the definition of tidal volume?
during normal breathing, the total amount breathed in and out in one cycle.
What is the definition of vital capacity?
the maximum you can forcibly breath in and out.
Which one of the following is a LONG TERM effect of participation in exercise on the respiratory system?
A. Increase in blood flow
B. Increase in oxygen debt
C. Increase in vital capacity
D. Increase in breathing rate
Can you explain what happens during ‘gaseous exchange?
Breathing oxygen into the the alveoli and then breathing out carbon dioxide (by-product).
