Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the definition for heart rate?
The number of times the heart beats per minute.
What is the definition for stroke volume?
The amount of blood leaving the heart per beat.
What are the immediate and short term effects of exercise on the body? (straight away)
Increase in heart rate, increase in stroke volume, increase in blood pressure (systolic), increased rate of blood flow and increase oxygen delivery.
What are the long term effects of exercise on the body?
increase in size and strength of the heart (hypertrophy), increase in stroke volume, lower resting heart rate, increased maximum cardiac output, increased number of red blood cells, lower cholesterol levels.
What are the two types of blood pressure? Also, what are their differences?
Systolic- the pressure in the arteries when the heart is contracting.
Diastolic- the pressure in the arteries when the heart is relaxing.
How is HDL and LDL cholesterol different from one another? Give your reasoning.
High density lipoprotein (HDL)- is the ‘good’ cholesterol that can take away cholesterol to be broken down.
Low density lipoprotein (LDL)- is the ‘bad’ cholesterol that can cause deposits to build up in the arteries. This makes it harder for the blood to circulate and can lead to heart disease.
Complete the equation- HR X ____ = CO
Heart rate X Stroke Volume= Cardiac Output.
The cardiovascular system consists of…..?
The heart, the blood vessels, the blood
What is the correct definition for cardiac output?
The amount of blood leaving the heart per minute.
How can you reduce coronary heart disease?
Regular participation in exercise which will increase the size of the heart and will reduce the chance of coronary heart disease.
