Muscular System Flashcards
Can you name the 11 muscles in the body?
Biceps, triceps, deltoid, trapezius, lattisimus dorsi, pectorals, abdominals, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, gastrocnemius
Give an example of an antagonistic muscle pair?
Bicep and Tricep.
Quadricep and Hamstring.
Explain the term ‘antagonistic pair’ in relation to muscle movement?
One muscle contracts while the other relaxes to bring about movement.
What are the two types of muscle contraction?
Isometric and Isotonic.
What is the difference between isometric and isotonic?
Isometric- muscle contracts but there is no visible movement.
Isotonic- muscle contracts with movement.
What are the short term effects of exercise on the muscular system?
muscles contract, increased need for oxygen, increased amount of lactic acid, increase in muscle temperature, increased production of carbon dioxide.
What are the long term effects of exercise on the muscular system?
increased strength of muscle, increased muscle hypertrophy, tendons and ligaments also become stronger.
What is the importance of rest on the muscular system?
Adequate rest is vital for the body to recover between exercise sessions.
Too much rest, however can result in general inactivity, causing muscle atrophy.
How would a muscle strain need to be treated?
R.I.C.E- Rest, ice, compression, elevation
Why is protein important for your muscles?
Aids muscle growth and repairs the muscle.
