function, names and disorders
structure of skeletal system
scapula - shoulder area
Humerus - top arm
Radius - lower arm outer
pelvis
ulna - lower arm inner
carpals - wrist
femur - thigh bone
patella - knee cap
fibula - outer bottom leg bone
tibia - inner bottom leg bone
talus - ankle
main functions of skeletal system
movement
support
protection
production of blood cells
mineral storage
structural shape
synovial joints
freely movable joints that allow free movement during physical activity
types of synovial joints
hinge - found in elbow, knee and ankle. allow movement in one direction
ball and socket - found in shoulder and hip and allow movement in almost all directions.
what does connective tissue consist of
ligaments, cartilage and tendons
what do ligaments do
connect bone to bone to help keep the joint together,
Stabilise joints during movement and prevent dislocation,
can absorb shock due to elasticity, which protects joint
help to maintain correct posture and movement
